Grade 7 Music Band Programs Being Eliminated Once Again in BC School Districts

As supporters of music education, it is very disappointing to see more districts across the province having to cut their elementary music programs as a means to save money due to lack of funding. Cuts were made in Vancouver 10 years ago, and just recently, the Surrey School District cut their Grade 7 Band program. Burnaby, Maple Ridge and Merritt public schools are next.

Why does it matter to us?

We have seen the impact of the cuts that happened in Vancouver. Less students being educated and exposed to music at the elementary level decreases the likelihood of students continuing with music into their high school years. And if there is not enough interest at the secondary level, we can potentially see the district cutting back support for music in high schools.
